On Tuesday, we proudly came together on-site to celebrate NAIDOC Week, a time to recognise and honour the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
This year’s theme, “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy”, recognises the power and potential of young First Nations people and the importance of passing on culture, knowledge and leadership to future generations.
The onsite celebration included a Welcome to Country by local Wanaruah woman, Jade Perry, and a Smoking Ceremony, traditional dancing and a moving speech from members of Waagan Galga and a didgeridoo performance by Uncle Richie Lawton from Budbudda Dreaming. The aroma of BBQ and coffee filled the air as we shared food, stories and connection.
We were especially delighted to be joined by 45 students from the Upper Hunter Community Services Holiday Program, representing the next generation, who took part in the dancing and celebrations alongside our team.
