A Strategically Located Resource for a Growing World
For much of the world, coal remains the most affordable and reliable source of baseload power generation and an essential feedstock in steel production.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) has reported that global coal demand is on track to increase in 2025, reaching a new record of 8.85 billion tonnes. Demand growth is particularly strong in Southeast Asia, where coal consumption is expected to increase by more than 4% per year for at least the next five years.
Metallurgical coal will remain a critical raw material in the production of metals, especially steel, while high-energy, low-sulphur coal, such as that produced in the Hunter Valley, is the preferred fuel for hundreds of new high-efficiency, low-emissions (HELE) power stations currently under construction across Asia.
The Advantage of Muswellbrook
The Muswellbrook Shire is uniquely positioned to supply high-quality coal to global markets for the foreseeable future. Its established infrastructure, skilled workforce and proximity to export markets make it one of Australia’s most strategically important mining regions.
Malabar recognises the long-standing support shown by the Muswellbrook community and Council for the resources industry. We are committed to maintaining strong local partnerships as we work together to responsibly service sustained global demand for decades to come.
Supporting Energy Transition and Economic Diversification
With the closure of the Liddell Power Station, Muswellbrook is also well placed to play a role in replacement power generation and energy storage. While growth in domestic energy demand is naturally constrained, the region’s future is strengthened by its ability to participate in both (i) global commodity markets, and, (ii) Australia’s energy transition.
Malabar believes Muswellbrook’s outlook is significantly stronger than many other regional NSW communities, supported by a long-term export industry tied to global demand, alongside new opportunities in renewable energy and storage.
Muswellbrook has the enviable opportunity to contribute to both sectors well into the future.
Investing in the Region’s Future
Malabar is actively investing in the region’s export industry, power generation transition and agricultural enterprises, including:
- The world class Maxwell underground mines,
- Additional growth of our mining activities through the development of the Maxwell West and Maxwell North reserves,
- Development of the approved 25 MW behind-the-meter Maxwell Solar Farm
- Progression of the 350 MW Edderton Solar Farm
- Recently announced mega-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in partnership with Akaysha Energy
Together, these initiatives represent significant long-term capital investment in mining investments, power generation and energy storage infrastructure for the Muswellbrook Shire, supporting jobs, reliability and a resilient regional economy.
